How to use Tenstack
Everything you need to use the app, one screen at a time. Features marked PRO need Tenstack Pro.
01 · The method in short
The 10% Method is a progressive saving method. Your stack is a separate account of your own, just for savings: Tenstack keeps track of what you put in and tells you how much to transfer.
- 10% of every payment. When money comes in, set 10% aside before you use it.
- Deposit when you can. A gift, a refund, what's left at the end of the month: add it with a free deposit.
- Milestones and the extra deposit. At every milestone you get a card, and you can celebrate with an extra deposit, always optional.
- Your stack isn't for every day. Don't use it for normal spending. If you need that money, you can withdraw it.
You can read the rules in the app by tapping ? at the top of your stack, or in Rules › Help › How the method works.
Tenstack doesn't connect to your bank and never moves money: you make the transfers yourself, from your banking app.
02 · First launch
The first time you open the app, five cards explain the method. Swipe with Next or tap Skip.
Then Tenstack asks Where are you starting from? and suggests the right rules. You can change them whenever you like.
- My income is irregular: 10% of every payment and an extra deposit with the Steady pace, a milestone every $500.
- I'm just starting to earn: 10% of every payment and an extra deposit with the First steps pace, a milestone every $100.
- I'll set it up myself: you start with every rule off and Rules opens.
03 · Your stack
It's the first of the four sections in the bottom bar: Stack, History, Activity, Rules.
- In your stack: the total you've set aside. Next to it are Deposit and Withdraw.
- Next milestone: how far you are from the next milestone and the suggested extra deposit.
- Deposits: what you put in this month, by source: 10% of payments (or the percentage you chose with Pro), milestones and free deposits. Below it, what you saved this month.
- The last five months as bars, and Go to history.
- The orange + Income button, always at the bottom.
At the top right, ? explains the method and the button next to it opens Rules.
04 · Logging a payment
- Tap + Income and type how much you received.
- Tenstack works out your 10%, rounded up the way you chose in Rules.
- In your banking app, transfer that amount to your savings account.
- Once the transfer is done, tap Transferred.
Next to the question there's the date: it's today, but you can tap it and pick a past day to log a payment from earlier on. The income is recorded on that day, in its month.
The amount drops into your stack and you see the new total. Close with Done or tap Log another income.
Enter the amount that actually reached your account: your 10% is worked out on that.
05 · Free deposit
A gift, a refund, what's left at the end of the month: you can add any amount to your stack, whenever you like.
- In your stack, tap Deposit and type the amount.
- If you like, write where it comes from. It's optional.
- Make the transfer to your savings account and tap Transferred.
The deposit shows up in Activity and counts towards this month's savings, under «Free».
Here too, next to the question, there's today's date: tap it to pick a past day and record a deposit you made earlier on.
06 · Withdrawing
Your stack doesn't pay for everyday spending, but if something unexpected comes up you can always withdraw.
- In your stack, tap Withdraw and type the amount. It can't be more than what's available.
- Pick a reason: Emergency, Planned expense or Other. You can add a note; with Other it's required.
- Tap Log withdrawal, then move the money from your savings account to your current account.
The withdrawal stays in your history with its reason, no judgement. A withdrawal never takes away milestones you've already reached.
07 · Activity
The Activity section lists everything that went in and out of your stack, newest first, grouped by month: payments, milestone deposits, free deposits and withdrawals.
Entered the wrong amount? Swipe the entry to the left and tap the bin. After you confirm, the entry disappears and the total updates. If that entry had taken you past a milestone, the milestone card is removed together with its extra deposit.
08 · History
- At the top, the total in your stack and how much you've withdrawn overall.
- Months: for each month, what you saved and a bar split by color into 10%, Milestone and Free. Milestones you reached appear between the months and, under the bar, any withdrawal with its reason.
- Collection opens your milestone cards.
09 · Milestones and collection
When your stack passes a milestone, Tenstack celebrates and creates a milestone card. If the extra deposit is on, it suggests the one for this cycle: tap Add to make it or Not this time. No penalty. Then add the card to your collection.
Paces
- First steps: a milestone every $100, extra from $10 to $50.
- Steady: a milestone every $500, extra from $50 to $250.
- 10% Method: a milestone every $1,000, extra from $100 to $500.
- Custom PRO: you choose the milestone; the extra deposit scales with it and follows the same progression.
The extra deposit grows for five milestones, then starts again. The amount is fixed: you can only make it or skip it.
Special cards PRO
- 12 months: twelve months in a row with at least one deposit.
- 365 days: a year without withdrawals.
10 · Rules
The Rules section is your method: every rule can be switched on and off.
- Income: A share of every income, the Percentage (10%, from 1 to 50% with Pro PRO) and Round up: to the unit, to 5 or none. Below, an example shows how much you set aside on a $1,234 payment.
- Milestones: Extra deposit and the pace of your milestones.
- Appearance: Theme (system, light or dark), Colors PRO, Icon PRO and Currency (automatic, €, $, £ or CHF: it only changes the symbol, it doesn't convert amounts).
- Notifications: see below.
- Tenstack: Tenstack Pro.
- Help: how the method works, this manual, support and privacy.
11 · Colors and icons PRO
With Tenstack Pro you choose the app's colors in Rules › Appearance › Colors. There are four palettes:
- Classic: orange and lime.
- Green: jade green and electric lilac.
- Pink: magenta and aqua.
- Blue: electric blue and salmon.
The palette changes the color of buttons and details, in the widgets too. Backgrounds, text and black stay the same, in light and dark theme.
Icon
Each palette has two icons: light or dark, with the top of the stack in the detail color. Choose in Rules › Appearance › Icon. When you change palette the icon follows it and stays light or dark as you chose. iOS shows a message every time the icon changes.
12 · Notifications
In Rules › Notifications, turn on Milestone close: Tenstack lets you know when you're close to the next milestone. Once notifications are on you can add:
- Income reminders: a reminder if you log nothing for 7 days.
- Hide amounts: notifications don't show amounts. This only applies to notifications: the Lock Screen widget still shows the total.
You get at most one notification a day.
13 · Widgets
Touch and hold the Home Screen, tap Edit › Add Widget and search for Tenstack. The Income and Lock Screen widgets are free.
- Income: one tap and the 10% calculation opens.
- Stack PRO: the total and this month's savings; the medium size also shows the last five months.
- Next milestone PRO: how far you are and the suggested extra deposit.
- Lock Screen: the total and your progress towards the milestone.
14 · Tenstack Pro
The method stays free. Pro costs $5.99 once: no subscription, no renewals. Find it in Rules › Tenstack › Tenstack Pro.
- Custom percentage and milestones
- Stack and Next milestone widgets
- Four color palettes and icons
- Special cards
You can try Pro free for 7 days, once: we let you know two days before it ends, if you allowed notifications, and there's no automatic charge afterwards. If you change iPhone, tap Restore purchases.
15 · Your data
Everything stays on your iPhone: no account, no bank connection, no ads. Your data is part of your iPhone backup, on iCloud or on your computer. Details are on the Privacy page.
